there's a huge chunk of lint inside my iPhone! Looking at the Wikipedia article now on (a headphone plug), it makes complete sense since the tip is the left-channel, and the lint was apparently preventing the tip from touching the Cheers dude. Just like you said; sound still works perfectly but the microphone, volume control and song selector buttons no longer function.
