I'll be damed but a big chunk of something came out! The new ones didn't help, so I'm leaning toward a problem in the input jack on the phone. And all along I bet it was just a piece of lint. Iphone Headphone Controls Turn Off Mine seems to accumulate enough lint to make it hard to fully insert headphones if it goes too long between cleanings.

Like everyone else, I am truly amazed how much lint was down there. Like everyone else, I turned to Google after the pair of headphones I just bought wouldn't work either. U saved my LIFE!!! That did the trick.
But if your pockets are consistently filled with lint and dust (or tater tots if you happen to store them there), that extra ring won't make full contact with the iPhone's TeeDotOwe I had no lint in my ipod. I tried this, and pulled out 2cm of lint from the jack!! Just the Facts solved the problem - thanks.
